BOHDAN NAHAYLO was educated at the University of Leeds, the University of Manitoba, and the London School of Economics and Political Science. From 1978 to 1982 he was a researcher and later head of the Research Unit on the USSR at Amnesty Internal in London, England. While serving as AI’s expert and spokesperson on the USSR, he became an authoritative analyst, journalist, and author. During the first half of the 1980s Mr. Nahaylo contributed extensively to the British and US press and was frequently interviewed on radio and television. From 1984 to 1994 he worked for Radio Liberty in Munich as a senior analyst of Soviet foreign policy, director of the Ukrainian Language Service (1989–91), and assistant director of analytical research (1991–2004) at the RFE/RL Research Institute. From 1994 to 2013 he was a senior research officer, senior policy adviser, and program co-ordination officer for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. Mr. Nahaylo is the author of two books—Soviet Disunion: A History of the Nationalities Problem in the USSR (with Victor Swoboda, London, 1990) and The Ukrainian Resurgence (London and Toronto, 1999).
